How does this differ from other VPN technologies, such as IPSEC?
Traditionally, many VPNs relied on IPSec technology to allow remote access to resources on the internal network. These technologies are considered quite difficult to implement and are not the best choice for many VPN users due to the fact that granular access control cannot be enforced.
While IPSec VPNs are designed to connect users to entire networks, SSL-based VPNs connect those users to a range of applications and services within the network and therefore greater security measures can be implemented with the latter technology. IPSec VPNs are currently being relegated to fixed site-to-site links while SSL VPNs are emerging as the leading remote access technology for the majority of users.
